Finding a Sound Church Administrator

Here is welcoming you to another exciting episode of our weekly article.

Last week, we defined what administration is, its root, and also the fact that pastoring the people must not be misconstrued for administering the ministry.

Being the founder and supreme head of a ministry is one thing; having the skills and the time for the nitty-gritty of administration is yet another. It is not compulsory that as the founder of the ministry, you must have the gift of administration. Like the Bible says:

“So God has appointed some in the church [for His own use]: first apostles (special messengers); second prophets (inspired preachers and expounders); third teachers; then wonder-workers; then those with ability to heal the sick; helpers; administrators; [speakers in] different (unknown) tongues.” (1 Cor. 12:28, AMP)

However, as a leader, the onus is on you to find, groom and empower those in your team who have this gift and who can help instill the requisite order in the work that you do.

Here are three (3) of the essential qualities to look out for in your potential administrator:

  1. Availability. When the apostles were about to appoint administrators, they chose from those who had always been with them, and who were also available to do the job. Adapting this to contemporary times, this may not necessarily be those who have been in the ministry for a long while, but who have “been with and available for Jesus.”
  2. Beliefs. The administrator is the eyes of the ministry, especially to the people under his immediate supervision. If he does not believe in the ministry, message, values and the person of the set man, it will be challenging to adequately present and represent the ministry to the people.
  3. Competence. The administrator must also be competent to do the job. Like the Bible admonished, they can be tried in smaller tasks to test their capacity. The responsibilities can be increased gradually as they show increasing commitment to achieving desirable outcomes.

God bless you.
